Periodontists are helpful when our patients need procedures that deal with the gum and bone that hold our teeth in place. These specialists are well informed on the latest procedures to help with gum grafting, further treatment of periodontal disease, and prolonging the life of some teeth with bone grafting. We refer to periodontists in our area to help restore the foundation of the teeth and work closely with them for your overall treatment.
Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)
Scaling and root planing occurs when a patient has not had a cleaning over several years and the build up of calculus or “tartar” accumulates below the gumline. This calculus is harmful to the body and causes bone loss around the bone that holds your teeth. If this bacteria is not removed, further bone loss occurs which can lead to tooth loss and/or infection of a tooth. This infection is called Periodontal Disease and there are some patients with other diseases such as diabetes and other heart conditions which are more at risk with this type of bacteria in their system. With a scaling and root planing treatment, you are seen more regularly (about every 3-4 months) to prevent the build up of harmful bacteria for periodontal maintenance.
